Twinspot Goby Genesis (Signigobius biocellatus) — Digital Soul #018

When Signigobius biocellatus raises both dorsal fins and shuffles sideways above the sand — forward, then back, then forward again — the paired ocelli read to a predator as the eyes of a crab, not a fish. The illusion is helped by the body itself, which appears double-ended, so an attacker cannot tell which way it will move.

Hoese and Allen described it in 1977 as a new genus and a new species at once. Half a century later it remains the only known member of Signigobius. Its name says exactly that: signus, a mark, and biocellatus, two small eyespots.

It feeds by taking mouthfuls of sand, sifting out the microscopic invertebrates living between the grains, and expelling the sand through its gills. Pairs bond and stay together; separated individuals rarely last long.
