Teira Batfish Genesis (Platax teira) — Digital Soul #016

This species carries an Arabic word into world science.

In 1775 the naturalist Peter Forsskål described it from specimens collected on the Red Sea coast, and took its name from "teyra" — the word local fishermen used for the juveniles, which drift at the surface disguised as fallen leaves. Forsskål died on that expedition; his work was published after his death by his travelling companion. The Arabic word has been the fish's scientific name ever since, in every language, for 251 years.

Platax teira is the largest of all batfishes, reaching 70 centimetres. Adults school over reef slopes and shift colour as you watch — silver-white to banded brown and back again within seconds.
