Bearded Ghoul Genesis (Inimicus didactylus) — Digital Soul #017

This fish does not swim so much as walk.

The lowest two rays of each pectoral fin have separated from the web entirely and function as legs. The bearded ghoul crawls across sand and silt on them, one deliberate step at a time, then buries itself until only the eyes remain and waits for prey to pass. Its genus name is Latin for "enemy"; didactylus means "two-fingered," after those walking rays.

It is a close relative of the true stonefishes, and its dorsal spines are venomous. When threatened it flares those drab pectoral fins to reveal brilliant warning colour underneath — a display most divers never see, because the fish is almost impossible to spot in the first place.

This is the first venomous species in the CECOZ Genesis collection, and the first from the family Synanceiidae.
