Tasselled Leatherjacket Genesis (Chaetodermis penicilligerus) — Digital Soul #022

Its name means "hair skin," and it is exact.

 

Chaetodermis penicilligerus is covered in branching dermal appendages — along the margins of the body and scattered across the flanks — that break its outline into fronds of drifting weed. Set against the algae-rich reefs where it lives, the fish stops being a fish. It becomes vegetation.

 

Cuvier described it in 1816. Two centuries later it remains the only known member of the genus Chaetodermis: one species, one genus, no relatives.

 

It grows to 31 centimetres, moves alone by day through weedy coastal reefs between 2 and 25 metres, and feeds on algae and small invertebrates.
