Rosy Dory Genesis (Cyttopsis rosea) — Digital Soul #021

Cyttopsis rosea lives on continental slopes between 150 and 730 metres, usually far deeper than 300 — a hunter of small fishes and swimming crustaceans, taken as bycatch in deep trawls and never targeted. It grows to 22 centimetres, its head bones thin and soft, its upper jaw extremely protrusible, its chest armoured with a row of spiny bucklers.

 

For over 180 years it has been treated as a single species with a near-worldwide range. Recent integrative taxonomy suggests otherwise: molecular analysis of northeast Atlantic specimens resolved three distinct operational taxonomic units, and Atlantic and Pacific specimens differ in caudal peduncle length, vertebral count and lateral-line scale count. The rosy dory may not be one fish at all. The question is open.

 

Its family, Parazenidae, contains only four species worldwide. This is the first of them in the CECOZ Genesis collection, and the second piece from the deep sea.
