Discover the ghost of the deep continental slopes. The Rosy Dory, scientifically known as Cyttopsis rosea — also called the Pink Dory or Red Dory — is a striking deep-water zeiform fish with a distinctively compressed oval body, enormous protrusible mouth, and a delicate rosy-pink to silvery coloration that gives it an almost translucent, ghost-like appearance in the dim light of its natural deep-sea habitat. This circumtropical species inhabits the continental slopes, seamounts, ridges, and deep-water rises across most of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Oceans, typically found at depths between 150 and 730 meters — a true denizen of the twilight and midnight zones where sunlight never fully penetrates. Despite its wide circumglobal distribution, the Rosy Dory remains one of the lesser-known and scientifically intriguing members of its order, as recent molecular research has suggested that what is currently recognized as a single species may in fact represent multiple cryptic species with subtle morphological and genetic differences across ocean basins — making it one of the most scientifically fascinating fish featured in the CECOZ Marine Explorer Series. An active predator of the deep, it feeds primarily on smaller fishes and decapod crustaceans, ambushing prey using its dramatically extendable upper jaw.
