The Radiant Indian Ocean Melon Butterflyfish
The Melon Butterflyfish (Chaetodon trifasciatus), also known as the Indian Redfin Butterflyfish, is a vividly patterned coral‑reef butterflyfish found across the tropical Indian Ocean. With its soft lavender‑blue upper body, glowing yellow‑orange chest and fins, and fine pin‑striped lines sweeping across its flanks, this species creates a striking contrast as it glides above living coral. It naturally inhabits coral‑rich lagoons and semi‑protected seaward reefs, where pairs patrol established territories and pick delicately at coral surfaces.
Common Name: Melon Butterflyfish (Indian Redfin Butterflyfish)
Scientific Name: Chaetodon trifasciatus
Family: Chaetodontidae (Butterflyfishes)
Origin / Habitat: Indian Ocean – From East Africa and islands of the western and central Indian Ocean to the Andaman Sea, Cocos‑Keeling Islands, Christmas Island, and western Indonesia.
