Discover the voracious wolf of the open ocean. The Longnose Lancetfish, scientifically known as Alepisaurus borealis, is a bizarre and fascinating deep-water predator known for its highly elongated, scaleless body, a massive sail-like dorsal fin spanning most of its back, and a fearsome gaping mouth lined with razor-sharp fangs. This highly active, aggressive pelagic species inhabits the Tropical Eastern and Western Pacific, as well as Oceania, migrating vertically from the deep mesopelagic twilight zones up to the epipelagic surface waters to hunt. Growing to an astonishing 300 cm in length, it is a mid-water swimmer that feeds voraciously on live fishes and invertebrates—and is even known for its cannibalistic tendencies. Its dramatic, dragon-like appearance and formidable predatory adaptations make it one of the most thrilling and scientifically intriguing deep-sea creatures featured in the CECOZ Marine Explorer Series.
