Discover one of the Indo-Pacific's most extraordinarily elongated and visually distinctive reef fish. The Hairytail Blenny, scientifically known as Xiphasia setifer, is a remarkable and highly unusual member of the Blenniidae family — a species so dramatically different in body form from the typical blenny that it is instantly recognizable as something entirely unique among coral reef inhabitants. The body of Xiphasia setifer is extraordinarily long and ribbon-like, extending to a full adult length of up to 50 centimeters in a sinuous, eel-like form that curves and undulates with fluid grace as the fish moves slowly along the sandy and rubble reef substrates it inhabits. The coloration is a bold and immediately striking arrangement of warm golden-yellow and deep chocolate-brown arranged in a precise, evenly spaced saddle-banded pattern along the entire length of the body — broad rectangular blocks of dark brown alternating with golden-yellow in a sequence that runs continuously from just behind the small, upward-gazing head all the way to the fine, thread-like tip of the elongated tail. This banded pattern is believed to function as disruptive camouflage, breaking up the outline of the animal's long body against sandy substrates and rubble zones, making it significantly harder to detect by predators scanning the reef floor. The genus name Xiphasia refers to the sword-like elongated body form, while the species name setifer means "bristle-bearing," a reference to the fine, hair-like cirri found on the head region. This species is a secretive burrower and ambush predator, remaining largely concealed in sandy burrows or under rubble during the day and emerging cautiously to feed on small invertebrates and zooplankton in the surrounding substrate. Its extraordinary eel-like elongation, bold golden-brown banded pattern, secretive burrowing lifestyle, and unique taxonomic position within the Blenniidae make Xiphasia setifer one of the most fascinating and visually dramatic subjects in the CECOZ Marine Explorer Series.
