The Rugged Master Predator of the North Pacific Seabed
The Gilbert's Irish Lord (Hemilepidotus gilberti) is a formidable and visually striking marine species, easily identified by its large, heavily banded body, prominent spiky dorsal fins, and rugged, armored appearance. As a large and stealthy bottom-dwelling predator, it brings a dramatic and imposing presence to specialized temperate marine aquariums. Due to its size, predatory nature, and specific cooler-water requirements, this magnificent sculpin is highly recommended for experienced aquarists with large setups.
Key Features of this Edition:
Global Presence: Native to the cooler, rugged coastal waters of the Temperate Western Pacific and North Pacific.
Specialized Behavior: A robust, bottom-dwelling ambush predator that spends its time resting on rocky or sandy substrates, perfectly blending into its environment before striking.
Natural Habitat & Diet: Adapted to temperate environments, it is a formidable carnivore. In the aquarium, it requires a substantial, high-protein diet consisting of prepared fleshy foods, large marine invertebrates, and live fishes.
Lighting Preference: Thrives in brightly lit environments but strictly without direct sunlight, mimicking the diffuse light of its natural deep coastal habitats.
