Epinephelus lanceolatus reaches 2.7 metres and 400 kilograms — among the largest bony fishes that live on coral reefs. It is a solitary ambush predator that swallows spiny lobsters, reef fish and small sharks whole, and it holds territory in caves and wrecks for years at a time.

Digital Soul #011 places it above a city rather than a reef, because at that scale the reef is no longer the right frame.

Its status on the IUCN Red List is Data Deficient: heavily targeted by fishing, slow to mature, and so poorly surveyed that its true numbers are unknown.
