Meet the armored dragon of the ocean floor. The Dragon Sea Moth, scientifically known as Parapegasus natans, is one of the most visually striking and biologically unusual bottom-dwelling marine fishes in the Indo-Pacific — a master of camouflage encased entirely in fused bony armor plates, with spectacular fan-shaped pectoral fins that spread dramatically like wings when the fish is alarmed or displaying. Found across the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to Australia, Japan, and the Pacific Islands, this enigmatic species inhabits sandy, muddy, and rubble-strewn coastal floors, estuaries, seagrass beds, and shallow reef margins at depths of 1–30 meters, where it "walks" slowly across the substrate using its specialized tentacular pelvic fins to probe for tiny invertebrates hidden in the sediment. One of its most remarkable biological traits is its ability to periodically shed its entire external skin in one piece — a unique self-cleaning mechanism that removes parasites and fouling organisms, a feature almost unheard of among bony fishes. The Dragon Sea Moth is capable of rapid color change, typically displaying a cryptic brownish to dark reticulated pattern that renders it virtually indistinguishable from the sandy seafloor.

Developed using real marine reference observations and scientific classification standards.
