The Masked Ember of the Western Pacific Reefs
The Conspicuous Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus conspicillatus) is a highly prized reef angelfish instantly recognized by its glowing ember‑orange body framed in midnight blue and finished with a bright yellow tail. A bold black‑and‑gold mask surrounds the eye and snout, giving this species its “conspicuous” appearance as it cruises along dimly lit reef walls and caves. It naturally inhabits steep outer reef slopes and drop‑offs in the Western Pacific, especially around Lord Howe Island, the Coral Sea, and nearby offshore reefs, where it grazes on sponges and tunicates attached to rocky substrates.
Common Name: Conspicuous Angelfish
Scientific Name: Chaetodontoplus conspicillatus
Family: Pomacanthidae (Angelfishes)
Origin / Habitat: Western Pacific – Lord Howe Island region, Coral Sea, and nearby offshore reef systems
