Discover the serpent of the Caribbean shallows. The Chain Moray, scientifically known as Echidna catenata — also called the Chainlink Moray — is a striking reef-dwelling eel with a dark, heavy body marked by a mesmerizing yellow to white lattice-work that resembles an interlocking chain. Unlike many of its cousins, the Chain Moray features specialized blunt, pebble-like teeth perfectly adapted for crushing the hard shells of crabs and shrimp, its favorite delicacies. This nocturnal predator is a master of the Tropical Western Atlantic, ranging from the warm waters of Florida and the Bahamas down to the coast of Brazil, where it hides in rocky crevices and tide pools, sometimes even venturing partly out of the water to ambush unsuspecting prey. Its unique "knotting" behavior, where it wraps its body to gain leverage, and its ability to survive short periods of exposure on exposed reefs make it one of the most resilient and fascinating predators in the CECOZ Marine Explorer Series.

Developed using real marine reference observations and scientific classification standards.
