Bullseye Spikefish Genesis (Johnsonina eriomma) — Digital Soul #019

Between 183 and 549 metres below the Caribbean, in water no diver reaches, lives a fish almost nobody has seen alive.

George Myers described Johnsonina eriomma in 1934 from specimens hauled up north of Tobago, and named it for what struck him first: eri-, very, and omma, eye. Enormous eyes for a world with almost no light — and a single ringed ocellus on the flank that occurs in no other member of its family.

It remains the only species in its genus, and the only member of its subfamily in the entire Atlantic Ocean.

This is the first Atlantic species in the CECOZ Genesis collection, and the first from the deep sea. Every piece before it came from water you could dive. Four independent axes of rarity meet here — monotypic genus, sole Atlantic representative of its subfamily, a trait unique within its family, and a depth range beyond human reach. That is why #019 sits in the top tier.
