The Shadow‑Edged Ember of the Western Pacific Reefs

The Black Velvet Angelfish (Juvenile) (Chaetodontoplus melanosoma) is a dramatic dwarf angelfish recognized by its deep black body framed with a glowing yellow edge and a bright golden mask on the face. In its juvenile stage, the strong contrast between the dark body and the luminous fin margins makes this species look like a living silhouette moving through reef shadows. It naturally inhabits sponge‑rich reef slopes and rocky outcrops in the Western Pacific, where it weaves among crevices and overhangs while grazing on sponges and other encrusting invertebrates.

Common Name: Black Velvet Angelfish (Juvenile)

Scientific Name: Chaetodontoplus melanosoma (juvenile stage)

Family: Pomacanthidae (Angelfishes)

Origin / Habitat: Western Pacific – Indonesia and surrounding reef systems
