Species Overview: The Blackbacked Butterflyfish (Chaetodon melannotus) is a striking species characterized by a bold black saddle on its back and diagonal black stripes against a silvery-white body. It is known for its graceful movement and distinct pattern, often found in coral-rich lagoons.

Reef Safe: No. It has a natural appetite for soft corals (Octocorals) and stony coral polyps.
Experience Level: Intermediate. It is generally easier to acclimatize than obligate corallivores but still requires stable water conditions.

Water Parameters: Temp 24-26°C | Salinity 1.020-1.025 sg.
Tank Setup: Requires plenty of open swimming space combined with live rock for grazing and security.
Diet & Behavior:
Behavior: Peaceful and somewhat shy initially.
Diet: Omnivore. In nature, it feeds on coral polyps. In captivity, it can be weaned onto mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and algae-based preparations.
